Choosing the right professionals to support your family can feel overwhelming, especially when you're expecting a new baby. From healthcare providers to photographers, knowing what questions to ask and what to look for can make all the difference.
That's why we're delighted to welcome our friends at Beautiful Bairns Photography to the blog. In this guest post, founder Rachael shares her expert insight into newborn photography safety, helping parents understand what to look for when choosing a photographer and why experience, training and a baby-led approach matter so much.
Is newborn photography safe? What every parent should know
One of the questions I get asked most often by expectant parents is, "Is newborn photography safe?"
And honestly, I love that parents ask.
When your baby is only a few days old, safety is naturally your biggest priority. Handing your precious wee one to someone you've only just met can feel like a huge leap of faith. You want beautiful photographs, of course, but more importantly, you want to know your baby is in safe, experienced hands.
The simple answer is yes, newborn photography can be very safe. But it's important to understand that not all newborn photographers have the same level of training or experience.
Not all newborn photographers are trained in baby safety
Newborn photography has grown enormously since I first started photographing babies back in 2011. When I began, there were only a handful of photographers specialising in newborn photography in Edinburgh. Today there are hundreds.
The reality is that anyone can buy a camera and call themselves a newborn photographer. There is currently no legal requirement for specialist newborn safety training.
That means it's incredibly important to ask questions before booking.
I have trained extensively with some of the best newborn photographers in the world, continually developing my skills in newborn posing, handling and safety. I also undertake regular training to ensure I stay up to date with the safest and gentlest techniques available.
For me, learning never stops. Every baby deserves the very best care and I am always looking for ways to improve the experience for the families who trust me with their little ones.
Experience matters
Training is important, but so is experience.
I've been working with children for over 30 years and have spent the last 15 years specialising in newborn photography. During that time I have photographed thousands of babies.
What does that mean for you?
It means I know how to read a baby's cues. I know when they're comfortable, when they need a break, when they're becoming unsettled and when they simply need a cuddle or a feed.
Newborn photography isn't just about lighting and posing. It's about understanding babies.
Every newborn is different. Some babies love being wrapped. Some prefer more freedom to stretch. Some sleep deeply while others are more alert. My experience allows me to adapt every session to suit your baby rather than expecting your baby to fit into a rigid plan.
Your baby's safety comes before any photograph
This is probably the most important thing I can tell you.
Your baby's comfort and safety will always be my top priority - not getting the shot.
If a pose isn't right for your baby, we don't do it.
If your baby isn't comfortable, we stop.
If your baby needs fed, cuddled or changed, that's exactly what happens.
No photograph is ever more important than your baby's wellbeing.
In fact, some of the most beautiful images come from simply allowing babies to relax naturally and following their lead.
At Beautiful Bairns, baby is boss.
Keeping baby comfortable throughout the session
Newborn babies can't regulate their body temperature as effectively as adults, which is why creating the right environment is so important.
My studio is carefully heated to ensure babies stay cosy and comfortable throughout their session. Babies are often photographed wrapped in soft fabrics or with very little clothing, so maintaining a warm environment helps them stay settled and sleepy.
Of course, Scottish winters aren't the only thing we need to think about!
During the warmer months I use air conditioning to keep the studio comfortable and ensure babies never overheat. Maintaining the right temperature is something I monitor throughout every session.
The goal is simple: your baby should feel safe, secure and comfortable at all times.
Clean, breathable fabrics for every baby
Everything that touches your baby matters.
I use soft, breathable natural fabrics during newborn sessions and every wrap, blanket and outfit is washed after every use.
Newborn skin is incredibly delicate, so I carefully select materials that are gentle against your baby's skin while also helping them stay comfortable throughout the session.
Safe posing, always
You may have seen newborn photographs online featuring babies in curled-up poses or seemingly balancing in ways that look impossible.
What many parents don't realise is that some poses should only ever be created using specialist techniques and safety measures.
I only pose babies in ways that are comfortable, natural and safe. I pay close attention to your baby's circulation, breathing and comfort throughout every pose.
Many poses are modified to suit each individual baby, and some babies simply won't enjoy certain positions. That's absolutely fine.
My goal isn't to force a pose. It's to create beautiful images while ensuring your baby remains safe and comfortable from beginning to end.
Every baby's story is different
Before every session I take time to learn about your baby's birth and early days.
I will always ask if there were any complications during pregnancy or delivery that I should be aware of. For example, if your baby has clicky hips, has experienced a difficult delivery, or has any medical considerations, this may affect how I position or handle them during their session.
This information helps me tailor the session to your baby and ensures their comfort remains at the centre of everything I do.
Relax, I've got this
One of the things parents tell me most often is how surprised they are by how relaxing their newborn session feels.
With 15 years of newborn photography experience behind me, you don't need to worry about a thing.
The studio has a big comfy sofa waiting for you. Put your feet up, enjoy a coffee while it's still hot and simply soak in every tiny detail of your new baby.
Watch those little yawns.
Those tiny fingers.
Those perfect eyelashes.
The way they curl up against your chest.
These early days pass in the blink of an eye. My job is to preserve them safely, beautifully and stress-free, so you can simply enjoy being in your baby bubble.
Because while beautiful photographs matter, nothing matters more than your baby's safety.
